At the University of Utah Department of Public Safety, some of our most valuable team members walk on four legs. The K-9 unit, led by Sergeant Matt Feltenberger, consists of three highly trained dogs and their dedicated handlers who work tirelessly to keep our campus community safe.
Eva, partnered with Sergeant Feltenberger, is a unique member of the team with dual specialties. Not only is she trained in explosives detection, she’s also a skilled tracker who can help locate missing persons, including children and elderly individuals. Her gentle nature makes her perfectly suited for these sensitive missions.
Luna and Coach, handled by Senior Officer Jason Jarvie and Officer Jithame Hitinui respectively, complete the team as explosives detection specialists. You’ll often find these dedicated K-9s conducting thorough sweeps of the University stadium and arena before major sporting events and gymnastics meets, ensuring the safety of thousands of spectators.
For these remarkable dogs, work isn’t just a job – it’s play with a purpose. Their reward for a successful find? A favorite toy or squeaky ball. This approach not only keeps them motivated but also brings joy to their important duties.
For Sergeant Feltenberger, working with K-9s has been a refreshing change of pace after years in law enforcement. “Working with the dogs is like a shot in the arm after all the negativity we routinely see,” he shares, highlighting how these four-legged officers bring positivity to their crucial work of keeping our campus secure.
