The University of Utah Department of Public Safety recently hosted a POST-certified Adult Sexual Assault Investigations course. This specialized training brought together campus law enforcement and local police agencies to enhance trauma-informed approaches to sexual assault cases.
“The goal is to educate police officers and detectives on how to conduct sexual assault investigations properly. This training brings together a multidisciplinary team so investigators can understand the entire process from initial contact through to final resolution,” said Major Heather Sturzenegger, instructor for the program.
The three-day course was co-sponsored by Utah POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) and the Utah Prosecution Council and featured presentations from state crime lab technicians, forensic nurses, and prosecutors who guided officers through each step of the investigative process.
Statewide Impact
The program operates on a rotating schedule, offered three times annually at different locations throughout Utah to ensure that both urban and rural law enforcement agencies have access to this critical training.
Creating Safe Spaces
As part of their ongoing efforts to implement trauma-informed practices, the University of Utah Police Department maintains a soft interview room specifically designed for survivors.
“This is a space where victims of crime or who have experienced trauma can have a safe and comfortable place to tell what happened to them,” explained Major Sturzenegger. The room’s design reflects the department’s understanding that physical environment plays a crucial role in supporting survivors through the reporting process.
Leadership in Campus Safety
This program represents one facet of the Department of Public Safety’s ongoing commitment to professional development and survivor-centered approaches—ensuring that every investigation is conducted with compassion, thoroughness, and respect, not just on the U campus, but for institutions across the state.
