Reuban Torres named new Department of Public Safety captain

Lieutenant Reuban Torres will be appointed to the position of Department of Public Safety captain effective June 1. Captain Torres will command the UUPD Patrol Operations.

“I’ve been very impressed with Reuban’s expertise, experience and team-building skills,” said Chief Safety Officer Keith Squires. “He’s done a great job assisting our detectives and victim advocates in developing into a true team that is providing exceptional services to our community. Reuban’s a great leader and gentleman who has much to offer in helping all members of our police team be successful and in advancing their career goals. I’m grateful for Captain Torres in preparing himself for this opportunity and accepting this significant responsibility.”

Captain Torres has a distinguished background in law enforcement and military service. He began his law enforcement career with the Salt Lake City Police Department, where he proudly served for more than 21 years. Over the course of his tenure, he held a wide range of assignments that shaped his well-rounded leadership and operational expertise. His roles included patrol, gang investigations, SWAT, Training Officer, Motors, undercover narcotics and vice, detective in robbery and violent crimes, and a Task Force Officer (TFO) with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

For the past six years, Captain Torres has continued his service with the University of Utah Police Department. Here, he has worked in patrol, served as a Sergeant over the Investigations Division, and most recently, as a Lieutenant in Investigations, overseeing complex cases and supervising our detective/victim advocate team.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to step into this new role and continue serving alongside such a great team,” said Torres. “It’s an honor to help shape the future of our department and continue building on the great work already being done.”

Captain Torres will continue to assist the Investigations team in the interim.
