The University of Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) is committed to transparency, awareness, and strong partnerships with our campus community. As part of that commitment, we’re introducing a new tool designed to help you stay informed: the Community Crime Map.
This interactive map allows students, faculty, and staff to view reported police activity across campus in a way that’s easy to explore and understand.
How It Works
The Community Crime Map lets you search for specific locations—like a residence hall, academic building, or parking area—or quickly navigate to campus by typing “University of Utah.”
Each icon on the map represents a reported incident. In some areas, multiple reports may appear in one location. You can click on those icons to view more details and better understand what’s happening nearby.
To help protect privacy, locations are slightly adjusted and incidents are grouped into standardized categories.
Find What Matters to You
The tool is designed to be flexible and user-friendly:
- Filter by incident type to focus on what matters most to you
- Adjust date ranges to view recent activity or longer-term trends
- Explore trends like bike and scooter thefts, which are grouped under “Theft – Other”
You can also view hotspot areas based on your filters, giving you a broader sense of activity across different parts of campus.
Stay Updated with Alerts
Want updates about a specific area? You can sign up for alerts and customize them based on your preferences.
- Choose the types of incidents you want to track
- Set a distance around a location
- Receive updates daily, weekly, or monthly
This feature is especially helpful if you want to stay informed about activity near your residence, office, or other frequently visited areas.
Timely, Transparent Information
The map is updated three times daily to provide timely information while maintaining responsible data practices.
It’s important to remember that this tool is designed to support awareness—not to draw conclusions about overall safety. DPS continues to work closely with campus partners to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
A Complement to Existing Resources
The Community Crime Map works alongside the existing DPS safety dashboard, offering additional ways to stay informed and engaged.
