Community Crime Mapping for a Safer Campus

The University of Utah Department of Public Safety is committed to transparency, awareness, and strong partnerships with our campus community. As part of this commitment, we provide access to the LexisNexis Community Crime Map, a public-facing tool that complements other resources used to support campus safety and information sharing.

What Is the Community Crime Map?

The Community Crime Map is an interactive, web-based platform that allows students, parents, employees, and community members to view reported police activity within the University of Utah’s primary campus area. Users can explore incident locations, agency boundaries, and basic crime analytics. The map is updated three times daily to provide timely information while maintaining responsible data and privacy practices.

How to Use the Map

Users can:

  1. Search by address or location
  2. Filter incidents by date range or offense type
  3. Create geographic buffers around areas of interest
  4. View basic data analytics
  5. Sign up for notifications when new incidents are reported

To better reflect the campus environment, bicycle and motorized conveyance thefts (including scooters and e-bikes) are categorized separately as “Theft – Other.”  This distinction helps clearly separate these incidents from other reported crimes.

All incidents displayed on the map are grouped into standardized, generalized categories required by the Community Crime Map platform, even when the original police report contains more specific terminology.

Data Accuracy and Privacy

To protect victim privacy, some incident locations are displayed using offset mapping rather than exact addresses. While incident data extends back to approximately 2013, information prior to 2022 has not been fully audited or validated and is provided for general informational purposes only.

Accessing University of Utah Data

From the Community Crime Map homepage, users can either zoom into the campus area or enter “University of Utah” in the filter field to view incidents within our jurisdiction.

For emergencies or immediate safety concerns, always contact the University of Utah Department of Public Safety directly.
